The hike from Bica da Cana to Encumeada is a stunning trail that offers a mix of breathtaking views and challenging terrain. Starting at the Bica da Cana viewpoint, you can catch a beautiful sunrise that illuminates the surrounding peaks and valleys. This initial part of the hike is relatively gentle, allowing you to enjoy the early morning light and the serene atmosphere.

As you continue, you’ll follow the Levada da Serra, a traditional irrigation channel that provides a scenic and relatively flat route. This part of the hike is characterized by its serene atmosphere and the sound of flowing water, making it a peaceful experience. The trail is well-maintained but can be narrow and rocky in places, so it’s important to watch your step.

You’ll also pass through a few short tunnels, adding a sense of adventure to the journey. The lush Laurissilva forest surrounds you, with its rich biodiversity and vibrant greenery. This section of the hike is perfect for taking in the natural beauty of Madeira and enjoying the fresh mountain air.

As you approach Encumeada, the scenery shifts dramatically—from serene, shaded forests to sweeping ocean vistas. This portion of the PR17 trail showcases Madeira's stunning diversity in landscape and atmosphere, making it a truly memorable hiking experience.
