The 25 fontes lagoon
The lagoon is named after the “25 springs” (fontes) that feed its waters, creating a picturesque cascade into a crystal-clear pool. This is the perfect place to take a break, enjoy a snack, and soak in the natural beauty.
Along the way, hikers are treated to breathtaking views of the valley, lush greenery, and occasional glimpses of the ocean. The trail offers a mix of shaded paths and open vistas, making it both refreshing and visually captivating.
The trail passes through the Laurisilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to unique species such as the Trocaz Pigeon and the Madeiran Firecrest. Plant enthusiasts will enjoy spotting endemic flora, including the Madeira Blueberry and Madeira Violet.
The trailhead is accessible by car or taxi. There is a parking area at Rabaçal, but during peak seasons, spaces may fill up quickly. Shuttle buses often operate from the parking area to the start of the trail, saving hikers the initial steep descent.
