Before your trip

Here are some rules of conduct and safety that must always be respected. If you are going for a hike, read carefully!

Due to its geographical location Madeira’s high mountains are exposed to sudden and severe weather changes. Hence the hikes are always weather dependent. When you book the transfer to Pico do Arieiro or to other destination in mountains, you cannot book the weather. On rare occasions this could mean having to cancel for reasons of safety. If we have to cancel due to weather or unsafe conditions, you will be fully refunded. We can’t guarantee automatic rebooking for another day, since the following transfers might be already fully booked. You should wear clothes which are suitable for changeable weather conditions. See “Essential backpacking & best hiking gear".

Knowing how to prepare for a hiking and trekking trip can make the difference between a good hike and an unforgettable one. Preparing for a hiking trip ahead of time will help you avoid physical discomfort and overpacking.

We suggest taking time to reflect on your overall fitness level and the trail’s specifications (i.e. elevation, surface) when selecting the trail. To enjoy your hike to the fullest, we strongly advise not pushing your body past its limits. Straining your body to the maximum can lead to dangerous scenarios for both you and your fellow hikers. Physical training for hiking — as a beginner or expert trekker — is an important part of hiking preparation.

❕Pack light, stay flexible: Day backpack (25-40 L)

❕Be water & wind resistant: Waterproof jacket & boots with good ankle support

❕When cooler, insulate the body from cold: Thermal underwear, gloves & hat

❕Don’t get sunburned: Sunglasses, light sun hat & sunscreen of SPF 50

❕Stay hydrated & energetic: 2-3 litres of water & snacks

❕Headlamp, powerbank & optional extras:

❕Trekking poles if you want solid knee & back support

❕Personal medical kit & personal toiletries

I would like to note that this option is only a transfer to Rabacal and return. Everything was great. We got the information with all details one day before the trip. The bus was very comfortable. The driver was very nice, gave all explanations that you need for this way. We even got a bit lost returning, but the organisation side was very helpful and gave us all details how to get back via messenger. 10/10

The bus came on time, zero problems with transportation. It’s a large bus so transport will take a little bit longer than with smaller vehicles. The bus driver was nice enough to wait a few minutes for a guest who was late.

We travelled on a coach - it was always on time and the driver made sure everyone was there before leaving. As it was cold and raining, he even waited for the two of us half-way into the trail to check if we were all right and wanted to continue walking or get straight to Fanal Forest. We continued as it was such a spectacular walk. The forest was also out of this world, really beautiful. Great thanks to the driver for his kindness!

Everything went great. The pickup from the meeting points was on time and the transfer was very professional in a large bus. We could easily take over the entire route to the top and even had time to rest and have some wine at the end of the trekking route.

Easy, uncomplicated transfer to the hike... Bus driver was clearly very experienced on the windy roads and gave us good hiking directions.
